Dr Anthony Seldon Visits Millfield
On Tuesday the 19th May Dr. Anthony Seldon, was guest speaker at Millfield's Academic Society. Dr Seldon, an authority on British history, contemporary politics & education and current Headmaster of Wellington College, came to talk to the pupils about Gordon Brown. Clearly regarded by many of Millfield's pupils as one of the more interesting guest speakers, Dr Seldon was educated at Tonbridge School and graduating from Worcester College, Oxford with an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and completing his PhD at London School of Economics.
Dr. Seldon surprised everyone by beginning his talk with the question "what exactly is it that you expect me to speak about?" Millfield pupils were introduced to the political world behind the curtain of media reports detailing Gordon Brown, the man. Whilst Dr. Seldon himself is considered to be a strong supporter of Brown he believes that he made a lot of mistakes during his time as Prime Minister. At the same time, Dr Seldon highlighted the deceit that had occurred within the Labour Party ranks against Brown which lead to Blair seizing power before Brown was given the chance.
Millfield pupils had the opportunity of asking questions, some of which heated the conversation further. Pupils asked him whether he thought that perhaps it was a good thing we no longer had ideological politicians controlled by dogma rather than pragmatism, to which Dr Seldon replied, rather diplomatically, that perhaps a balance needed to be struck between the two.
