Millfield pupils attend talk by Wells MP
Three Millfield pupils were given a taste of politics in October when they attended a talk and lunch hosted by Wells MP Tessa Munt.
Sixth Formers Luke Downham, Ed Durgan and Jack Owlett were in the audience as Baroness Shirley Williams spoke about women's issues and the NHS Bill currently going through the House of Lords, where she has a seat as a Liberal Democrat Peer.
Ms Williams has been at the centre of UK politics since the 1960s, holding several top government posts including Secretary of State for Education and Science during the 1970s.
Ms Munt has long been a strong supporter of Millfield, attending talks and dinners in the boarding houses and contributing to the government and politics programme.
Luke will be shadowing Ms Munt at the Houses of Parliament in December after securing a work placement with her. He hopes to study politics at a top British university next year.
Millfield is well-known for its political links having educated six current MPs. In fact, only Eton is represented more in Parliament.
Business Studies teacher Richard Owlett, who organised the trip, said: "It was a fantastic experience for the pupils to attend this talk as it gave them a chance to listen to two remarkable politicians.
"The two spoke with passion and Ms Williams touched upon some important issues within the NHS.
"Attending talks like these are all part of a pupil's development and they learnt things which will help during their final years at Millfield and beyond."
