Christopher Hirst

As well as a Governor of Millfield (appointed 2010), Christopher is governor of two other senior independent schools. During his career he has also governed 9 prep schools from Devon to Northumberland. In retirement, after 25 years of headmastering, he is embarking on a Research project on The Role of the Public School Chapel in the 1st World War.

Christopher was educated at Merchant Taylor`s (Northwood) and read History at Trinity Hall, Cambridge (1966-69). After two years as an international banker in Chile he returned to Cambridge to take a PGCE before joining the staff of Radley College in 1972 where he taught History and Political Thought to Oxbridge level. He also coached Rugby and was master i/c Cricket and Rugby Fives. He became a Housemaster in 1978 (Tutor D Social). In 1985 Christopher became Headmaster of Kelly College and in 1995 he became Headmaster of Sedbergh until his retirement in August 2010. From 1995 - 2000 he was Chairman of the HMC Sports Committee and a member of the HMC Committee from 1998-2003. He was Chairman of the North East Division of HMC in 2002.

Christopher`s interest outside his professional life are sporting (previously playing cricket for Cambridge University, Buckinghamshire and Chile), Antiquarian and Literary. He is married to Sara (nee Petherick) who was a member of the Millfield English Department from 1975-1982.
