Welcome to the Art Department
Millfield is totally committed to the Arts and offers all our pupils opportunities to explore their creative side. We have invested in some of the very latest facilities, housed in our purpose-built Fine Arts Centre. This means those who opt to take Art or Art & Design as an examination subject have access to outstanding resources seldom seen outside a university.
Staff in the department are highly trained experts in their own field with the flexibility to teach across all disciplines. This allows us to offer a range of vocational and Fine Art courses to suit all interests and levels of ability, where pupils can engage in everything from drawing and painting to photography to computer assisted design.
Our courses:
• Art GCSE
• Art A-Level – Fine Art
• Art A-Level – Photography
• BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design
Enrichment activities
As part of The Millfield Sculpture Commission our Sculptor in Residence project provides a different sculptor working at Millfield for six to eight weeks every year on a piece of work that will become part of our extensive Sculpture Park. Pupils, staff and sculptor have the opportunity to discuss the work whilst it is being constructed/created together with other issues in the world of Art.
Our nationally recognised Atkinson Gallery holds major contemporary art exhibitions, promoting and stimulating debate and provides pupils with access to the artists to talk about their work.
In support of pupils’ A-Level studies we arrange stimulating and thought-provoking visits to the major art galleries in the UK, Europe and America. We also organise trips to countries with rich visual histories and cultures, such as Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Japan.
