Millfield Pupils Celebrate A level Success on Results Day
Pupils at Millfield are celebrating after achieving A level results which confirm highly sought after University and College places. A cohort of 243 pupils took a range of 34 different subjects this year at Millfield. The results in brief are as follows:
• 6.6% A* grades (5.7% in 2010)
• 32.0% A* to A grades (27.1% in 2010)
• 61.1% A* to B grades (55.3% in 2010)
• 99.4% A* to E grades (98.4% in 2010)
Particular congratulations go to:
• Bobby East (from Othery) achieved an outstanding 4 A* grades (Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics); he will be taking up his place at Bristol University to study Engineering Mathematics. Whilst at Millfield Bobby, also a talented musician, has been a key member of the Jazz band and Orchestra.
• Former Head Girl, Sarah Woods (from Somerton) who achieved 2 A* grades in English Literature and Maths also obtained D3 in Pre-U History. Sarah now takes up her place at Jesus College, Cambridge to read English.
• Kurtis Gibson (from East Huntspill) achieved 2 A* grades (English Literature and Maths) and 2 A grades in Further Maths and Physics. During the Autumn term of his final year here at Millfield, Kurtis embarked upon an inspiring half marathon a day challenge to raise money for charity. Kurtis now takes his place at Belmont Tennessee (US) on a dual Athletics and Maths programme.
• Katie Coleman (from Butleigh) achieved 2 A grades in French and Italian and also obtained a D2 in Pre-U History. Katie now takes her place at St Hugh's, Oxford to read French and Italian.
• Zhanna Tarasko (from Russia) achieved an A* grade in Russian, 2 A grades in Business Studies and Psychology and a B grade in Maths; she takes her place at St Andrew's to study Management. Whilst at Millfield, Zhanna was a keen member of the Golf squad which won the World School's Golf Challenge this year in South Africa.
Many congratulations to Vsevolod Mineev (Lower Sixth, from Russia) who obtained a B in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), for his project, "Can humans understand quantum mechanics?". This course is regarded as an additional advantage for University entrance. Pupils take ownership of the course and independently manage the project with minimal input from teachers.
Millfield BTEC Art & Design pupils have also secured highly-competitive places at leading Art institutions with pupils Joren Heise (from Holland) enrolled to study architecture at Sheffield University and Poppy Pritchard-Barrett (from Woodbridge, Suffolk) is set to attend London College of Fashion to study footwear design.
Dexter Smith (from Coltishall, Norfolk) achieved a distinction in BTEC Sport and a B grade in A level Business Studies; Dexter takes up his place at Reading to study Business and Management. Dexter won an academic prize for BTEC Sport at this year's Parents' Day.
Commenting on the pupils' achievements, Craig Considine, Headmaster Millfield said: "I am full of admiration for what our pupils have achieved. Their academic abilities and hard work have been rewarded with strong results. They are a talented group of young people that we have enjoyed working with'.
