Higher Education & Careers

The Higher Education and Careers department is located in a suite of rooms in the north west corner of the Meyer Theatre complex just opposite the Main Library and is open throughout the school year during usual office hours. At any stage in his or her school career, a pupil may consult one of a team of experienced tutors who advise on careers and all forms of higher education. The Higher Education and Careers Secretary will help you to find the right information and make appointments with tutors. Detailed information and specialist advisers are available in all relevant areas, including Oxbridge and American applications.

A vast range of courses, destinations and interests

The sheer range of courses and destinations that interest our pupils always makes interesting reading from Aerospace Engineering to Equine Science, and from Business Finance to Fashion Management and Marketing. Of our Sixth Form leavers, approximately 95% go on to some form of higher education and they receive ample help in choosing the right course and gaining admission. Some 50% of these students would typically gain entry to the prestigious Russell Group universities. Successful applications are made to a vast range of places including Oxbridge and LSE, the elite sporting universities of Loughborough and Bath, agricultural colleges, medical schools and even Swiss hospitality schools. Drama students have reached LAMDA and RWCMD, whereas artists have secured places at Central St. Martin’s and the London College of Fashion. Those few that eschew university include students who have passed the Marines’ Potential Officers’ Course and several potential professional sportsmen, including rugby players and a Grand Prix hopeful. Where appropriate, pupils are prepared for Oxbridge entrance in small seminar groups.

Helping students go to American Universities

In none of this should our continuing American successes be forgotten. Assistance with Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SATs) is given to those applying to American universities and guidance is provided to help pupils understand the application process and the options available to them. Millfield is one of only seven English schools that are currently SAT ‘Centers’ and we have been sending students across the Atlantic, including to Harvard for many years.

ISCO

All Year 11 pupils can subscribe to the Independent Schools' Careers Organisation (ISCO), which uses psychometric profiling and individual interviews to suggest careers and relevant courses on the basis of interests and expected academic performance. The school is also a member of ISCO, which provides other services designed to support pupils throughout their career at Millfield.

Please do not hesitate to come and see the Higher Education and Careers centre on your visit where we will be only too glad to offer individual advice.
