Art, Design & Technology
“A new major resource to compliment the CRMA Fine Art Centre is the Design & Technology centre. Occupying more than 2500sq metres it is probably the largest building of Design Technology in the Independent sector. It is equipped with state of the art technology and will allow students to achieve the highest standards possible in their Design work”
Art, Design and Technology are very popular subjects at Millfield. In 2002 the number of students studying Art, Design and Technology was almost 900, of those 500 students were studying examination courses. In the wonderfully equipped Fine Arts Centre pupils are taught by specialist tutors who teach a wide range of arts, including Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Textiles, Sculpture, and Photography. The Art Department aims to encourage pupils’ imaginative and perceptual abilities, by visual and tactile means, developing skills in a variety of media through experimentation and innovation so that all students can fulfil their potential.
Specialist projects offer pupils a range of exciting opportunities. Numerous gallery and cultural trips are available, in addition to the Artist in Residence scheme where pupils are in contact with professional artists. The Millfield Arts Project Programme exhibits artists work throughout the year in the form of 4/5 gallery exhibitions. This is open to artists nationally who compete for selection by a committee of artists, critics, gallery directors and collectors.
Design Technology offers an equally impressive range of exciting activities: welding, fabrication, casting, digital photography, computer programmes for CADCAM and graphics programs such as Coreldraw. A superb new facility completed in 2003 is extremely well equipped high and low tech facilities in workshops and studios. All kinds of exciting skills and techniques are available such as working in a variety of materials, wood, metal, plastics as well as other media such as clay and plaster. Students are able to experience all types of design; Graphics, Product design, Resistant materials and Electronics are just some of the subjects on offer. Students are involved with Interior Design, Fashion Design, Furniture Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and produce items ranging from mobile phones to guitars!
The Art, Design and Technology department is a truly creative and challenging department where students can use their imaginative, innovative and practical skills.
