The Millfield Biology Department is located in a purpose-built building consisting of 11 teaching laboratories, 2 preparation rooms, 4 greenhouses and a computer suite consisting of 16 networked PC stations with access to the Internet. These computers are shared with the Physics and Chemistry Departments.
The Department is very well equipped and there is a great emphasis placed on practical work. There are 13 full time teaching staff who have a wide variety of specialisms and experiences, which are pooled to provide all pupils with a wide variety of resources. All students study Biology up to GCSE level. In year 10 pupils will take the Core Science GCSE exam and they will then continue to follow the Additional Science course, which is examined at the end of year 11. Both these science courses include Biology units.
Some pupils will study more Biology enabling them to take a GCSE in the Separate Science subjects, so that they will gain 3 GCSEs from their study of Science. In the Sixth form AS and A2 level courses in both Biology and Psychology are on offer.
