Computing & ICT
At Millfield Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is used by all pupils and has a place in all subjects. There are 32 machine rooms across the campus with Internet access so that no one is ever far from a machine when they need one. Every machine is connected to the academic network so a student can continue work in any room at any time. There are 52 machines in the library for use during private study time. They are multimedia machines with a full set of software and Internet access. Each teaching block has at least one machine room. The Computing Department has 8 machine rooms so that practical lessons can be carried out as required.
Millfield students are given the opportunity to learn some programming as well as gaining advanced skills in using database, spreadsheets, graphics, word-processing and desktop publishing packages. They also learn to create web pages, experience computer control and data logging. There are two AS Level subjects: Computing – for students who are interested in how computers process data, how programs are written, and how networks are used to share data; and Information and Communication Technology – for students who are interested in the use of computers in the real world. They are both also available at A2 Level. Smaller groups can be set up for students who have not done GCSE (full course) in ICT in order to help them succeed in these subjects.
