The Millfield English Department is a lively centre for learning and cultural experience. With small teaching groups, pupils exceed expectations, benefiting from specialist teaching and expansive opportunities. Inside the classroom the Department reflects the National Curriculum. Outside the classroom the pupils take part in Debates, Literary Societies, Public Speaking Competitions, Reading Competitions, Theatre trips to Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Stratford and Taunton and The Globe on London’s South Bank.
The exceptionally well-equipped Meyer Theatre is a focus for the performing arts, including visits from theatre companies such as The National Theatre. The English Department use it extensively, too, for their many drama students who take GCSE Drama and A’ Level Theatre Studies and who often participate in the National Youth Theatre before going on to Drama Colleges and University Drama Departments. The television studio enables pupils to act and speak in front of cameras. Use is also made of the portable cameras for location filming.
Computers are key tools for English. The pooled computer rooms offer a convenient facility for drafting, redrafting, networking and information gathering. Following on from the GCSE course, students can study AS and A2 English Literature or Language and Literature. To maintain the long-standing 100% pass rate, the Department offers small tutorial groups to challenge the gifted and to assist others with essay organisation and verbal accuracy. The English Department expects high standards because the English Department achieves high standards. We deepen our pupils’ experiences and broaden their horizons.
