The Millfield History Department is a vibrant and friendly department, which teaches a wide range of topics at many different levels. History, Politics and Law are all taught to the Senior School from within the Department and, with eleven members of staff, there is a wealth of expertise and specialist knowledge to draw on. Many of the Department are experienced examiners, and some have published both textbooks and articles for various history journals. This gives them a clear focus on the current demands on students’ abilities.
The Millfield Annual History Conference complements the academic programme each year. This is when the Department plays host to a number of outside speakers who deliver papers on subjects relevant to the syllabus. The conference is attended by several hundred students and staff from other schools. There are several trips throughout the year, such as the annual trip to the battlefields of northern France for GCSE students. Other trips change each year, but have included visits to Berlin/Auschwitz and a joint History/Politics trip to the USA. Recently lectures have been delivered by Professor Ronald Hutten, Dr Piers Brendon and Professor Anthony Badger. An annual Year 9 multi media History quiz and a Speakeasy night for Year 11 are also popular events.
The Department endeavours to create a relaxed yet positive and focused atmosphere. Much dedicated support is given to students to enable them to fulfil their potential in this challenging subject. Frequent additional tutorials are given to help pupils who are struggling, or who need stretching further. The Department utilise a wide range at teaching strategies, and we reflect regularly on our practice to ensure we are providing the best possible service for our pupils. All rooms have now been provided with data projectors which has further enhanced our capacity to deliver effective teaching in a range of ways.
Passion for History and a commitment to excellent teaching are the bottom line amongst all members of the Department.
