Innovative, powerful, dynamic theatre
Millfield has a tradition of excellent productions and training pupils skills in physical and vocal performance to a very sophisticated level. We endeavour to produce creative and innovative theatre which is exciting, powerful and dynamic. In recent years we have staged a plethora of challenging, innovative and classical theatrical events.
Opportunities for all pupils to get involved
Two major productions a year are highlights of the school calendar and involve the talents of pupils right across the School. We have tackled shows as diverse as Shakespeare’s ‘Pericles’, Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’ right through to Kneehigh’s ‘Tristan and Yseult’, as well as creating new theatre works, such as ’Left Luggage’ – a physical piece of theatre exploring the lives of gap-year students. Whether devised ensemble projects, classical dramas or popular musicals, pupils of all ages are involved and have the opportunity to enjoy the results.
Theatre all year round
Pupils also produce over 30 of their own shows for examination. We also host a wonderfully eclectic Junior House Play Festival at the end of each school year. What’s more, every year, we take part in the National Theatres’ Connections Festival, the Schools’ Shakespeare Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. At Millfield we understand pupils thrive on innovation, diversity and opportunity. So we aim to give all pupils the chance to create exciting and imaginative productions; to live and breathe the theatre.
"The Greeks believed that it was a citizen's duty to watch a play. It was a kind of work in that it required attention, judgement, patience, all social virtues. The theatre is an expression of civilisation. We belong to a great country which has spawned great playwrights ... we, this colony of a few hundred, will be watching this play together, for a few hours we will no longer be despised prisoners and hated gaolers. We will laugh, we may be moved, we may even think a little. Can you suggest something else that will provide such an evening?"
