An Inspiring, Innovative and Inclusive Performance Community

Millfield Drama Department is an inspiring, innovative and inclusive community of people who are passionate about performance. We are keen advocates of theatre and drama’s power to change and enrich lives. As a department, we thrive on innovation, diversity and opportunity. We want to give all students the chance to create exciting and imaginative theatre. We currently seek to innovate and create new and exciting performance opportunities. We believe that a variety of styles and experiences is the key to engaging and extending our students understanding and abilities. They need to be exposed to new ways of performing as well as understanding the historical and cultural foundations of modern theatre. A varied program of study gives them the opportunity to extend their skills, giving them a comprehensive foundation to build upon and fostering a life-long interest in the theatre and the performing arts. As such, it is imperative that we provide a mixture of exciting theatrical events for them to participate in.

In the hands of dedicated specialists

Our dynamic department is run by two full-time drama specialists, an audition coaching and voice specialist, two part-time teachers, an Actor/Director-in-Residence and a professional Theatre Manager. We also compliment our knowledge and skills base by frequently bringing in outside practitioners who offer workshops and further expertise. In recent years, we have worked with some of the very best practicioners in modern theatre, including actors and directors from companies as diverse as Theatre de Complicite, Frantic Assembly and Kneehigh Theatre, three of the most innovative and well respected companies in Europe. We have also had the opportunity to work with Kevin McCurdy, one of the country’s leading Fight Directors, Sir Richard Eyre, who was the Director of the National Theatre and many other leading theatrical luminaries. We often invite touring theatre companies to perform and share our professional facilities.

Dynamic, committed staff helping pupils to achieve above and beyond their dreams

There is an excellent working relationship between the staff and students. Those who choose to study Drama are very proud and happy to do so at Millfield. We also have a strong academic record and achieve a very high percentage of A and B grades at GCSE, AS and A2 Level.

The Drama Department has a tradition of attracting serious academic students who go on to study the Arts at top universities both here and abroad.

"Drama at Millfield gave me confidence and it gave me drive - two qualities I believe to be essential in high achievement. Further, it opened my eyes to the wonder of theatre, I feel so lucky to have seen so many amazing productions as school trips. The quality of theatre at Millfield itself is not to be scoffed at either, with the school productions always being of top quality and drawing in huge crowds. I don't think any of this would be possible without the teachers and assistants who dedicate so much of their time into making, what I believe to be, the best department at Millfield."
