GCSE Economics
We introduce pupils to the fundamental theories behind economics by linking them to ‘real world’ events. Bringing the course material to life enthuses and focuses our pupils on how economics touches our lives.
Topics include:
• Property and Shares
• Business Competition
• Ways to reduce poverty
The GCSE is ideal for logical thinkers capable of achieving at least a grade B in GCSE maths. There is no coursework. Instead pupils sit one examination paper consisting of multiple choice, short answer and medium length answer questions based on actual world events and situations.
A-Level Economics
The Economics Sixth Form Department is one of the largest at Millfield. This is not surprising when you consider the number of doors economics opens. From law to finance, accountancy, business and politics. Equally it can help further careers and degrees in development and humanitarian work too.
As a Social Science AS-Level economics blends well with all subjects. Whilst GCSE economics is NOT required, a minimum of C grades in mathematics and english are essential (preferably B grades).
AS-Level Economics
The course content focuses on showing how economics relates to the modern world. Pupils study and develop an understanding of the working of competitive markets and how economies are managed.
Alongside fundamental economic theories the course is brought to life by studying real world issues such as:
• Oil and gas prices
• World poverty and inequality
• Global recessions
• Controlling inflation
• Reducing unemployment
AS-Level economics has no assessment work but two 90 minute exams
A2-Level Economics
About 90% of pupils choose to continue with economics to Advanced (A2) level. This involves two further exams: examinations to complete their A-Level qualification, business and economics:
• Business Economics And Economic Efficiency
• The Global Economy
