Courses

GCSE English Language and Literature

All pupils (except those who don’t have English as a native language) take GCSE English and English Literature. To maximise learning our GCSE classes are small, usually no more than 10 pupils. This creates an inspiring and supportive environment that allows pupils to really flourish.

Our AQA dual award GCSE requires pupils to demonstrate a wide range of reading, oral work and writing.

Pupils undertake written and oral coursework along with examinations for both subjects. Much of the first year involves completing coursework that focuses on:

• Shakespeare
• The work of a classical author (published pre-1914)
• A media text
• Writing an individual piece

As part of the coursework, the manner in which pupils discuss, debate and communicate is also assessed. In preparation for the final exam, set poetry is also studied.

In recent years, both subjects have enjoyed practically 100% A-C pass rate.

A-Level English Literature

English Literature, as Rebecca Woo put it, “Is an escape to another world, whether that of a great author or their fictional characters; the study of the human predicament” Rebecca Woo Millfield 2000-05

Equally the subject is a perfect springboard for degrees in Law, Philosophy, Classics, Economics and of course English Literature.

Pupils wishing to study this course must have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE English Literature, Language or Drama.

Course content

We teach the AQA A Level English course for AS and A2. It offers the ideal blend of the old and the new, individual texts and wider genres.

Pupils study two genres, Tragedy and the Gothic or Pastoral narrative and must also complete an individual research project. With texts ranging from Hosseini’s Kite Runner to Othello every literary taste is catered for.

Combining coursework with exams, the emphasis is on students developing their abilities to debate interpretations of text. This is achieved through careful analysis and an appreciation of the times the author lived in.

Ongoing support and workshops

Alongside day-to-day teaching, we work hard to maximise the learning and pleasure pupils draw from this wonderful subject.

Our LITSOC organises seminars and debates for pupils. These are usually timed to coincide with specific tasks or deadlines. We also organise numerous trips to really energise our pupils and give them a greater appreciation of the texts.
