GCSE History
At Millfield we follow the AQA Modern World syllabus. From the great depression to the rise of Hitler and the start of the Cold War, the course covers many of the most fascinating events and personalities of the 20th century. It’s perfect for pupils with enquiring minds. Individuals with an interest in reading and forming opinions.
The course is assessed by two examination papers at the end of the 5th Year and a controlled assessment (course work).
A-Level History
At A-Level pupils can explore the parts of history that most interest them. From the Russian Revolution to The American Civil War, The Crusades and Tudor England, they can study a wide range of different historical periods.
At Upper Sixth, pupils expand upon their learning and once more choose the periods of history they find most intriguing. These can include the Irish Question in the 19th Century, 12th Century England and the causes of World War Two.
AS/A2 History coursework and examinations
At AS-Level pupils take an essay and document paper, each worth 50% of the AS marks. A2-Level has two further papers – one further exam and course work (consisting of two 2,000 word assignments).
Cambridge Pre-U History
This is a new qualification that started in September 2008 and it is similar in content and style to the traditional A-Level before the introduction of AS/A2 exams.
Cambridge Pre-U History was developed by leading universities who feel it is better preparation for the study of history at university. It is a two year course with exams only at the end of the Upper Sixth and therefore requires a commitment for two years as there is no equivalent of the AS. This gives candidates a greater chance to develop and it is possible to achieve grades higher than the A-Level maximum. The course consists of 3 exam papers, two outlines papers and one special subject paper, worth 25% each with the remaining 25% being awarded for a piece of coursework on an historical area of the candidate’s choice.
