French

Why study French?

If you are looking for a stimulating course to study then look no further! If you love art, fashion, food, literature, sport or science, then French is the language for you. It is elegant, sophisticated and gentle on the ear. On the other hand, if you are thinking about a job in diplomacy, an important international organization or even an internet-based company, then once again French is the clear front-runner. In the fields of aeronautics, rail transport, food, luxury goods and fashion, it reflects high levels of expertise, technology and modernity.

It is one of the major languages for communication across the planet. Almost 119 million men and women have French as their mother tongue or are fluent in it; a further 63 million are partly French-speakers and 85 million young people and adults are learning the language: that is a total of about 270 million individuals. French is also one the United Nations' working languages, one of the two official languages of the International Olympics committee, the postal services' only universal language and the African Union's main language. Its impact can be measured by its status on the international scene and the extent to which it is used in decision-making and creative environments. Although less widely spoken than Chinese or Hindu, alongside English, it is the only language present on five continents.

If you're still not convinced then perhaps our trips to Nice and Vannes, the chance to converse with one of our two charming French assistants or a leading role in the French play will persuade you. Alternatively, you might just like to watch this video.

GCSE French

Pupils submit two formal speaking assessments (carried out with their teacher) and two formal written assessments, which are assessed by the exam board.

Additionally, pupils undertake reading and listening exams. The two units account for 20% of the overall mark, while speaking and writing each account for 30%.

French A-Level

The step up from GCSE sees students develop a greater understanding of French, its nuances, literature and culture. More rigorous in approach, the courses develop a deeper grasp of the language’s grammar and vocabulary.

Pupils take greater responsibility for their progress, particularly through regular extra-curricular listening and reading in the target language outside lessons.
