Welcome to the Languages Department
We offer an unrivalled choice of languages with up to nine offered to GCSE and six to A level. In the Sixth Form, we offer beginners' courses in Chinese, Japanese and Arabic to those who have not opted for them for GCSE. Understanding languages enables us to connect better with other cultures. It increases our understanding and appreciation of the world and people around us. Equally importantly, fluency in an additional language is a much sought-after skill in the workplace.
Our team of 20 linguists and five assistants inspire, encourage and challenge our pupils to develop their skills. To further this we ensure class sizes are minimal in size.
The highest levels of support are offered to pupils, including workshops, sessions for Gifted linguists and speakers.
Millfield runs well-supported annual exchanges to Hamburg, Vannes and Tokyo and trips to Venice, Nice and cities in Spain. We also offer travel bursaries to Sixth Form pupils who wish to travel or work abroad and need funding.
A-Level pupils enjoy study days, exhibitions, cinemas and theatre trips. Alongside these, students also participate in language productions such as “La casa de Bernarda Alba” by Lorca and Moliere’s “L’Avare”.
