Welcome to the Maths Department
Millfield has one of the largest Mathematics Department of any Independent school in the country. With size comes diversity, both in terms of the courses we offer and the pupils we teach. We welcome pupils of all abilities, from those with serious learning difficulties, to pupils who show exceptional mathematical talent.
The atmosphere in the department is positive, disciplined and most importantly fun; we believe that enjoying Mathematics is absolutely fundamental to success. Staff are dedicated to ensuring that every individual gains some sense of mathematical fulfilment during their time at Millfield.
The least able pupils are taught in small sets (typically five per class) and Learning Support is offered in class to even smaller numbers. Some Sixth Form pupils act as classroom assistants for GCSE sets helping with basic numeracy and confidence-building. Sets for more able groups tend to be larger, but the average class size is still only about 10 in both the lower school and in the Sixth Form. Our brightest pupils follow an accelerated course, taking both IGCSE Maths and Additional Maths in the Year 9, completing AS and A2 Mathematics in the Lower Sixth and then going on to take AS and A2 Further Maths in the Upper Sixth.
