Enrichment Activities
Mathematical enrichment is fundamental to our approach at Millifeld. We have a wide range of activities for our very best mathematicians. We also offer enrichment activities that are suitable for pupils of any level and encourage all to take part. Enrichment is an important aspect of our lessons, but we also provide other activities for pupils to participate in. Below are just some of the examples of the activities that take place throughout the year.
World Maths Day:
Over 500 Millfield pupils, from all years, and many members of staff participated in our World Maths Day competition. Competitors answered mental arithmetic questions against the clock competing on-line with pupils from around the world. Our top pupil answered 72 correct questions in one minute.
Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges:
Up to 130 pupils enter these demanding multiple choice competitions. Most pupils are given time to prepare for these in lessons and provided with past papers to complete as prep. In 2008 we had our highest number of pupils qualify for follow on rounds to these competitions, 13 took part in the intermediate Olympiads and three of these pupils came within the top 100 nationally for their age group.
UKMT team Maths Challenges:
We entered teams in the regional finals of both the Team Maths Challenge and the Senior Team Maths Challenge. In 2008-2009 the Millfield teams won both competitions and secured places in the national finals.
Millfield Maths Challenge:
A page of problems per term suitable for a range of abilities. The best written solutions are rewarded with certificates and prizes.
House Maths:
Mixed ability teams of four competed in house groupings during an evening of games and challenges for the title of House Maths Champions.
Millfield Team Maths Competition:
New for 2009 and hopefully to become an annual event. An evening competition involving teams of four pupils from local schools.
Pi Shop:
Sixth form pupils research, prepare and present a short talk to their peers on any area of mathematics that interests them. Pi shop takes place every half term and consists of a collection of short talks with tea and cake.
Presentations and Lectures from external speakers:
External speakers are invited to Millfield as often as possible. Last autumn a wide variety of pupils from years 10 to 13 enjoyed a visit from the Millennium Maths Project's Enigma roadshow.
