Millfield Senior School for pupils aged 13-18

Academic studies at Millfield Mathematics

Maths A-Level

Accredited by OCR, this course provides pupils with all the essential tools necessary for a Sixth Form mathematician and is good preparation for anyone wishing to study maths, or a maths related subject, beyond A-Level. The qualification consists of six modules (three for AS). Four of these are compulsory ‘Core’ modules covering pure topics – algebra, graphs, trigonometry, calculus, coordinate geometry and sequences. The other two modules are taken from a range of applied options. Typically our pupils take Statistics 1 in the Lower Sixth and Mechanics 1 in the upper sixth.

1.5 Maths (AS and A2 Maths with AS Further Maths)

Pupils opting for this course take five modules at the end of the Lower Sixth year and another four at the end of the Upper Sixth. There are three extra modules required for AS Further Maths; one of these must be ‘Further Pure 1’ and the other two can be made up from a range of pure and applied options. Further Pure 1 covers topics such as matrices and complex numbers. This course should only be considered by strong mathematicians.

Double Maths (AS and A2 Maths with AS and A2 Further Maths)

Pupils work towards both of these A-Levels in a single option block, so are still able to choose another three subjects to study in the sixth form. Six modules are taken to make up both A-Levels including two Further Pure modules. Double Maths is only suitable for strong mathematicians with a genuine interest in the subject. This course is excellent preparation for a maths degree.
