Maths GCSE
Who is it for?
All students at Millfield will sit either Maths GCSE or Maths IGCSE, both accredited by Edexcel. Both qualifications are designed to give a basic grasp of key mathematical concepts and processing skills. The exams have tiered Foundation and Higher entry levels to cater for pupils of all abilities. The IGCSE exam is excellent preparation for AS-Level Maths, and there is substantial overlap between the content of this syllabus and the first AS module. However, IGCSE is not a requirement for taking AS Maths.
Key areas of study:
• Algebra
• Graphs
• Numbers
• Shape & Space
• Statistics & Probability
• Trigonometry
• Calculus (IGCSE only)
Maths (Additional) GCSE
Who is it for?
This course is a free standing qualification accredited by OCR that lies between GCSE and AS-Level. It is offered to our most able Year 11 students who will have finished studying the IGCSE course in Year10. Both the IGCSE and Additional Maths exams are taken at the end of Year 11. There is some overlap between the two and working towards Additional Maths consolidates the work that they have covered in the IGCSE course. The course is designed to stretch pupils before they start the AS course in the Sixth Form and is the ideal preparation for 1.5 Maths or Further Maths A-Level, although not a prequisite.
Key areas of study:
• Algebra
• Co-ordinate Geometry
• Trigonometry
• Calculus
Each of these is used to support a topic from a recognised branch of Applied Mathematics.
The assesment is by a single two hour examination in the Summer, with grades A, B, C, D, E or U available. There is no coursework. Candidates are permitted to use a scientific or graphical calculator in the examination for this unit.
