Welcome to the Music Department
The Music Department typifies our unswerving commitment to the arts. In fact it’s one of the largest in the UK. With around 40 teaching staff, a purpose built Music School and Concert Hall our facilities include:
• 350-seat concert venue
• Rehearsal rooms
• Recording studios
• 25 teaching/practice rooms
• Specialist percussion room
All pupils study music from the moment they arrive and can opt to study it at GCSE and A-Level. This involves performing, composing, listening and appraising.
We’re proud of our pupils’ achievements in this wonderful arena. Many have secured places at major conservatories and with national orchestras and choirs.
Extra-curricular Music
With around 20 ensembles we perform many major concerts and regularly go on tour. Performances range from solo recitals to large-scale orchestral concerts and chamber music concerts to stage musicals. External performances are given at local churches and the local community on a regular basis in addition to competitions and festivals.
Music Scholarships
Millfield has a large Music Scholarship programme. We have up to 15 award holders in each year group. Music Scholarships are worth up to 15% of fees. If a scholarship has been awarded, parents in genuine financial need can also apply for a means-tested bursary.
Auditions at 13+ and 16+ take place in January or February.
