Welcome to Philosophy
At Millfield we believe that Philosophy is not something that should be simply studied. We encourage our pupils to debate and experience it. After all Philosophy is about asking ‘why’ and not simply accepting everything we hear and see.
Who should study Philosophy?
An open, enquiring mind is absolutely essential as is the ability to debate. The study of Philosophy demands a flexible outlook and is a good choice for individuals wishing to move onto further education especially PPE at Oxbridge.
Course structure
A-Level Philosophy offers a stimulating blend of university-style lectures, pupil seminars and Oxbridge-style tutorials in which an essay is read and returned to a small group of pupils.
AS-Level
Consisting of two units examined in two 90-minute papers, the syllabus focuses on four themes:
• Reason and experience
• Why should I be governed?
• The World
• Free will and determinism
Thought-provoking and challenging, these subjects provide pupils with an ideal entry point to Philosophy.
A2-Level
Builiding upon the AS-Level pupils continue to explore the subject by debating and investigating:
• Themes in Philosophy
• Political Philosophy and Moral Philosophy
• Philosophical Problems
• Mill’s ‘On Liberty’
The course again involves a 90-minute examination.
