Art (A Level)

The linear development of principles and practices, studied from Year 9 culminating in GCSE, continues in the Sixth Form where it is extended and embellished to the highest level. The options available, embracing many of the fundamental principles of Art, are designed to appeal to both academic and vocational students. In the case of the academic student, Art would be chosen as one of several A Levels for the vocational student, who has already decided on a career in Art & Design, the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design.

Students at this level are expected to cultivate their interests in Art by utilising the many ‘resource’ areas and the department’s own comprehensive Art library. The expected commitment to the subject involves studying beyond the statutory timetabled element. The student must provide clear evidence of sketchbook work demonstrating personal ideas and their development as well as a separate ‘Visual Diary’ of collected works showing artists who have influenced the student, together with evaluations of artists’ work. The department fully supports students in these endeavours and provides stimulating and thought provoking visits to Art Galleries, many in Europe and America, and to cultures of an exciting visual nature including India, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Japan.

The Millfield Arts Projects programme is also designed to provide stimulus and debate to Art students through the exhibitions in the gallery. Often the artists involved in an exhibition will talk to students about their work.

Students are assessed every six weeks and their performance discussed and documented both collectively with the group and on a personal level.
