Millfield Senior School for pupils aged 13-18

Arts Sculpture Park

Millfield School is set in 100 acres of extensive park land with wooded areas and a magnificent outlook towards Glastonbury Tor and the Mendip Hills. It is intended to use the commission together with the landscape to raise the artistic and aesthetic appreciation of passers-by.

Recently, starting with the Millennium year, saw a new material being used. Jane Gledhill produced 'Continuous Surface: Hollow' (No.19) in Jesmonite. The 2001 commission came from William Pye and was made from chrome steel. 'Cornucopia' (No.21) is an indoor water piece and is located in the downstairs foyer area of the new dining hall. 2002¹s winner was Edward Goolden with 'Fractus' (No. 23) - explosive like reflective metallic panels based on architecture, situated at the front of The Fine Arts Building. 2003 saw two joint winners: Simon Hitchens' serene piece 'A moment of stillness' (No. 25), made in black granite; and Marcus Vergette's aluminium folded cone 'Displacement' (No. 24), situated in a shallow lake. See these works near the new boarding houses. 2004 saw a return to using an age old material. Ian Newbery's 'Open Monolith' (No. 26) was made in Spanish white marble and is located on the lawn opposite the new Millfield staffroom's veranda.

Not all of the sculpture is commissioned; some (by well known sculptors) have been purchased or loaned. For example, following an exciting Sir Anthony Caro exhibition at the Atkinson Gallery in 2001, Millfield is delighted to have on loan, Caro's 'Double Tent'

This mixture of well known sculptors work, with up and coming talent, forms an interesting display, designed to enhance the environment and provoke interest all year round. We hope you enjoy your visit.
