Patterns in numbers,
making music
and riding high
I enjoy Mathematics because I like to see the patterns in numbers and the rhymes we use to help us remember certain mathematical rules. I recently did the Primary Maths Challenge and I got a bronze certificate – I just needed one more point and it would have been silver! In the future I want to use my mathematical skills to sum up how much money I need or will get.

The clarinet is fun, jolly and happy! I have one lesson a week and I practise 45 minutes a week.
When I was in Year 4 I was a member of the Orchestra and performed in concerts with them. I would like to aim for my next grade exam soon.

Horse riding is so much fun and I have made strong friendships with the school ponies and I love to groom them after my rides. Our Equestrian Centre is also a Pony Club centre and is on site, right next to the main school buildings. Some of my friends have their own ponies stabled here. I have three horses at home which I help to look after and ride. I once came 2nd in a show jumping competition in West Wiltshire against adults, which I was very proud of. I have enjoyed having the support of the equestrian staff; they are all very friendly and helpful.
I like competing alongside my friends in the school team.
We live close to the school and I started in Reception at Pre-Prep. I am one of four children and we are all at Millfield. The facilities are brilliant and I enjoy all my lessons. School is always fun, interesting and busy. I love pottery and like to play rounders in the summer; last summer the U10 girls’ team won the rounders tournament. I play centre forward in hockey and like to score goals.

I love Maths, especially the puzzles. I read lots of maths books which help me improve. My competition highlights are third place in the final round of Dauntsey's Dodecahedron, winning the DC Beagle Challenge and qualifying for the Maths Olympiad. I would like to study maths at university, get into the UKMT England team and become an actuary.

Chess is fantastic, I make lots of new friends and I enjoy teaching others. Millfield really supports me; I have three chess lessons a week and even have a Grand Master as a chess coach. In fact, chess is so well supported here, we have a scholarship. I compete in adult tournaments and so far I have travelled to Gibraltar, where I won the best under 10s.

Cricket is my favourite sport. At Millfield Prep I get great coaching in really good facilities which include nets all year round. I am in the U10 team and training with the U11. The U10s have enjoyed an amazing season - we have won all nine fixtures, including victories against three county teams. I really enjoy being a part of this great team and we are all friends.
Apart from cricket, I play hockey for the A team and rugby for the B team and enjoy being in the tennis and golf squad. I also take part in cross country and athletics through our extra-curricular programme.

Examining the world,
singing confidently and
swimming strongly
I like doing experiments and looking at life through various means. I particularly like examining animals and skeletons. I like to investigate how animals move and eat and how they adjust to the world around them; seeing how they have developed and adapted to climate change, for example.
I study Biology twice a week. We use microscopes and various chemicals in our experiments. Recently, we have been studying plants and the different food groups and how our body uses them. It would be fascinating to become a scientist. I would love to travel to remote places, such as rainforests, to collect samples to study back in the lab.

It makes me feel calm and relaxed when I am singing, I can lose myself in the songs. My favourite song is ‘Diamonds’ by Rihanna. I have also developed an interest in classical music since studying it in class. I particularly like the theme from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky.
I have one lesson per week and I practise at home. I sang in the Rock and Pop concert 'This is the Life' by Amy Macdonald. I am preparing for another singing exam soon.

"In 2012 the Millfield Prep Girls' team were overall winners for a record 27th consecutive year at the National IAPS Finals."
The sensation of being in the water makes me happy. I have always pushed myself to win and I’m very competitive! A highlight was the Nationals in the summer where I achieved a personal best in the 50m Free of 31.9 seconds. I have learned to be competitive at the right time, not to be upset if I don’t win all the time but to work my hardest.
My mum and dad encouraged me to try as much as possible and now I do things that I really love doing and that I am good at. They are happy if I try my best in everything.
I was born in China and moved to the UK when I was two. I joined Millfield Prep in 2011, I love the sports and facilities in particular. I enjoy moving to different classes for each lesson during the day. There are so many clubs to choose from, I do swimming, netball and cross country. School life is fun and exciting. The early morning dashes to swim squad training can be interesting. I really enjoy running and each year I do a five mile Boxing Day fun run – you get to choose a present at the end!

My favourite recipe is for Chelsea buns. I enjoy cooking because I like good food but also it will help me be able to cook for my family and friends.

Golf is a challenging sport and there is always something to work on.
I have definitely improved my golf since I have been at Millfield and I hope to continue improving my game. My most recent achievement is getting my handicap down to 11. The coaching is amazing at Millfield.
I am from Kent and have been at Millfield Prep for a year now. There is so much on offer; I am doing football, rugby, cricket, basketball, cross-country, athletics, shooting and hockey. The sport is amazing and the coach’s focus on what you need to work on just the same as my teachers do with my academic learning. Being at Millfield Prep is very enjoyable, happy and never dull.

The reason I like languages is that they open up the world and the many opportunities that lie out there. At Millfield Prep I study Spanish and French. I have six lessons of languages a week, three of each. Having so many lessons helps us to experience the four main aspects of languages; reading, writing, listening and speaking. I would like to develop them further at university and then travel around Europe.

I started playing the piano in Year 2. I like to play modern music such as Adele songs but I also play classical pieces by various composers such as Bach, Mozart and Handel. I have one lesson a week on a rotating timetable so I don’t miss the same academic lesson every week and try to practice for about fifteen minutes a day. Playing an instrument at Millfield Prep enables everyone to play in a variety of concerts, as well as for pleasure.

Hockey is my favourite sport because of the variety of skills needed and being able to play in a team environment where everyone looks out for one another. The best thing about being a goalkeeper is the adrenalin rush and knowing you are the last barrier of defence. This year our team are unbeaten in friendly fixtures and have become both county and regional champions. I have been selected for Somerset Junior Academy Centre as the only goalkeeper in my age group. At Millfield Prep I have Olympic athletes as coaches and the use of world class facilities.

Studying the past,
treading the boards and
running the track
History is my favourite subject. I find it really intriguing that what happened in the past helps shape the present. Aside from classes I use a variety of sources from text books, film and field trips to extend and develop my knowledge. Millfield also offers an excellent Lectures and Conferences programme, which means I can listen to and share dialogue with a variety of eminent speakers, a recent one being Eva Schloss, a holocaust survivor.
When I am acting I completely lose myself and become totally absorbed in my character. Acting takes real commitment and when there is a play we practice a minimum of nine hours a week. At Millfield you get lots of opportunities to be involved in Drama; I have played Sevu in ‘Tales of the Earth Surface’, Red-Cap in ‘Grimm Tales’, Juliet, in ’Romeo and Juliet’ and at the Shakespeare Schools Festival I played the lead role of Portia in ‘The Merchant of Venice’.

I’ve gained so much through the sprint training at Millfield. The facilities are amazing - having the track and gym means I can train all year round. My technique has improved so much as the coaches are really focused on your individual needs and they all inspire you to achieve your personal best. My highlights are representing the South East at the UK Sportshall Championships and also being a part of the English Schools’ Cup team, which was a great experience.

Millfield gives you an amazing range of activities to be involved in. I am fully committed to a dance squad called Lavolta, a representative on the School Council and I have singing lessons each week. Millfield also support many charities and I took the chance to work with Mencap which was not only a great pleasure but also went towards my Duke of Edinburgh award.
My favourite thing about Millfield is that even though it’s a big school, we are all still a really tight community. Millfield focuses on you as an individual so you can be the best you can be. The teachers are always there and so supportive. You always have someone to talk to and I think it is really good how much our teachers care.

"We weren’t expecting to win anything; my three team mates and I won silver medals, we were over the moon!"
The Millfield Ski Team has given me access to British Ski Academy coaches at our team race camp in Tignes, France. Another favourite moment was being invited to join the English Schools’ Ski Association training in Norway.
I came to Millfield from a local state school. I am taking 12 GCSEs in subjects ranging from Economics to Product Design. The staff are very helpful and friendly, always willing to give you a hand if you are struggling, be it with prep or a piece of music. I have performed in many theatre productions, currently I am rehearsing for the French play.

Guitar is such a social instrument; I really enjoy playing and having a sing along with friends. I play contemporary music on my acoustic guitar and last year I started to develop my own style. I enjoy listening to a song and with the help of my teacher being able to learn and adapt it. My favourite artists are in the genre of Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard which I enjoy mixing and adding my own percussionist touches. I play in school recitals but really enjoy playing in informal concerts, either in a band or as a soloist.

"Fencing requires a lot of skill which means I always have to think about tactical choices as I fight."
Fencing attracts me because it is very different from other sports. I also play hockey so it is nice to have an individual sport alongside a team sport. Fencing requires a lot of skill which means I always have to think about tactical choices as I fight. With the facility of the fencing salle I am able to train up to five times a week including individual tuition. I have qualified for the U17 GB squad which has taken me to competitions in France and Germany. This is a great opportunity for me to understand sport at an international level.
I moved from Surrey to Somerset and I am now in my sixth year at Millfield. I have built many strong friendships. Life is busy; there is never a dull moment and always something new to try. I love being a part of lots of activities, especially Drama, U16 hockey and the academic group, Eureka!

Putting points across,
challenging others and
driving forward
After seeking advice at Millfield’s Career office and discussing my ambitions for higher education with my group tutor and teachers I have taken English, Pre-U History, Biology and Chemistry at A level as I plan to study a law degree at either Oxbridge or Durham University. I specifically chose the Pre-U History course as it offers greater detail on a wider subject range than the A level syllabus. My long term goal is to become a barrister as I believe in justice and would enjoy the practicalities of this exciting role.
I also enjoy writing and using this expressive medium to capture the imaginations of others. Millfield¹s English department has encouraged me to develop my writing skills and I have been on frequent trips with the school to Bath Spa University to do creative writing courses.

"At Millfield we are encouraged to take part in house debating"
At Millfield we are encouraged to take part in house debating which I have been involved in since my third year. Having the opportunity to take part in active debate is important to me as it broadens your knowledge base, takes you out of your comfort zone, provokes quick thinking and gives you the ability to adapt quickly. I enjoy attending the inter-house debates in the lecture theatre on a regular basis and have also represented the school at the European Youth Parliament.
"There is a great

Rugby at Millfield teaches discipline, success through teamwork and hard work on and off the pitch. My debut for the 1st XV vs Coleg Morgannwy was one of my best moments. The great facilities available add to the experience of Rugby at Millfield. Our coaches are incredible which is not surprising given some of them have played the game at international level. From the Prep School to the Sixth Form every coach has challenged me as a player to think and act as an individual.

I’ve always had an interest in how the body works and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle which has naturally led me to study the sciences. My goal is to become a doctor of medicine as I want a career that is both challenging and rewarding. Millfield offers a variety of unique academic and co-curricular activities, given my medical career choice; I have chosen to join Think Tank, which is a club for academic scholars, and a group which studies dissection.
