Butleigh House is a purpose-built house situated on the southern fringe of the school campus and is home to about 58 boys. The Year 9, 10 and 11 boys inhabit two-man dorms and each Sixth Former has his own room with en-suite facilities. The house has three main common rooms with televisions, DVD and satellite facilities. The main common room has a table football game, pool table and a table tennis table. There is a Quiet Room which contains two computers, a selection of books, daily newspapers and monthly magazines. There is a kitchen for snacks and drinks. Outside there is a floodlit play area for basketball and football.
Ben and Julie Boyd became houseparents in September 2010, having spent the past four years as assistant houseparents at Walton House. Both Ben and Julie are Physical Education teachers: Julie joined Millfield in 2003 as a teacher of PE and as Head of the Dance Department and Ben joined in Sept 2009, after his previous role as Head of Department in a local secondary school. Ben currently takes the 1st XI Football Team and the Junior Boys Athletics Team. Julie is a sports coach and also teaches dance as part of the games programme.
Butleigh is a house with spirit, which promotes an ethos of respect for all with an unconditional positive regard. The Boyd's aim is to provide a relaxed and caring environment that allows the boys to feel secure and respected, with every opportunity to get as much as possible from Millfield. The priority is to provide a home away from school that the boys look forward to coming back to at the end of the day.
Julie and Ben have two children, Charlie and Megan. Ben and Julie's interests include their family, football (Wolverhampton Wanderers FC), Gloucester Rugby Club and the occasional surf.
