The name ‘Joan's Kitchen' (JK) comes from a Café on Glaston Road, run by a lady called Joan whose brother ran a transport business in the yard behind. The House was originally a farmhouse and the land ran back to Street Parish Church. In the 50s JK accommodated boys as the ‘overflow' from Millfield House. In the late 1950s Joan got married and sold the house to the School. The new Joan's Kitchen House was opened in September 2002 and is situated on the southern fringe of the school campus. As with all the Chindit Avenue houses, Joan's Kitchen is purpose built and is home to 60 boys. The Sixth Form have single en-suite study dorms and the junior boys are in two-man dorms.

The house has two main common rooms with televisions, DVD and satellite facilities; one is for the Sixth Form and one for the remainder of the house. The main common room has a table football game, pool table and a table tennis table. There is a Quiet Room which contains computers, a selection of books, daily newspapers and monthly magazines. There are small kitchen areas in each of the common rooms for snacks and drinks. Outside there is a floodlit play area for basketball and football.

Joan's Kitchen is a place where the boys can feel at home and can relax away from the pressures of school life. The house is home to boys with a wide range of interests and talents ranging from music to drama, rugby to horse riding. Our house grouping won the Churchill cup in 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, thanks to the boys' skills on and off the sporting field.

Mr Mills has been involved in houses for seven years. Prior to taking over Joan's Kitchen in 2009 he was an assistant houseparent for five years. Mr Mills teaches in the Business department and is involved in coaching rugby.
