Southfield opened in September 2002 on Chindit Avenue, close to neighbouring houses and tucked behind the junior playing fields. The House was named after Southfield House in Glastonbury, which it replaced.
Southfield has en-suite rooms for most of the Sixth Form and twin rooms for Years 9, 10 and 11. There are large common rooms with TVs plus table football, table tennis, two running machines & other exercise equipment. Outdoors Southfield has a large garden with a pond, and a netball court / hard playing area.
Houseparents Bob and Shaukina Orton have been at Southfield since 2003. Bob is Director of EAL at Millfield and Shaukina is also an EAL teacher. Before joining Millfield, Bob and Shaukina both worked overseas for 14 years as EAL teachers with the British Council, in France, Indonesia, Senegal and Brunei.
Their philosophy is that the House is principally the girls' second home - not just an extension of school and their priority is for the girls to feel ‘at home'.
The Ortons are both keen readers and enjoy country walks. Family is important to them and they look forward to get-togethers with their three sons, Alex, Tim and Stephen.
