Kernick House is one of the eight ‘new' houses on Chindit Avenue. It is in a lovely position, tucked away just behind the stables and close to both the main academic campus and the swimming pool. Kernick has been very fortunate to have come first in either the Junior or Senior Girls house matches for the past four years. This is partly due to the multi-talented girls in the house in all areas ranging from music, drama and across the various sports. The most important thing, however, has been the tremendous house spirit, whether this is in the final or the playoff for seventh or eighth place. The bribe of pizzas for winning a competition seems to do no harm either!
Winning trophies, however, is the ‘icing on the cake' and the main focus in the house is the importance of looking after and being kind to each other. The year groups mix very well and the senior girls and prefects go out of their way to befriend and help the younger girls settle in. The hub of the house is definitely the kitchen where all year groups will congregate and settle down to a mug of hot chocolate and a piece of toast, a chat or to watch the latest round of the X Factor.
David and Rebecca Landrock have been houseparents for six years. They have also been assistant houseparents in three different boys' houses. David has been at Millfield for twenty four years, during which time he has taught Religious Studies and Physical Education, been Master in charge of junior boys' games and has also for the last ten years assisted Christopher Coates, the Tutor for Admissions. Rebecca is an artist and has taught ceramics and printmaking at Millfield. She is currently teaching art at Millfield Prep School. Their children are Saul and Nigella. Saul is in the Senior school and Nigella is at the Prep School. The final member of the family is Aponi, a large but very soft and friendly Labrador/Husky cross.
The Landrocks escape in the holidays to either their ski apartment in France or their beach cabin at Seaview on the Isle of Wight to enjoy skiing, sailing and time out with family and friends.
