The name of Great House is from a former boarding house near Meare. Now a boys' new Day House, Great's facilities are really a big step forward. The pupils have a place to work, relax and it is a focal point in the morning when they arrive at school. The boys can get drinks and snacks after school too. Great is a friendly place with a good mix of different talents - sporting, musical and academic and charitable. Facilities include a pool table, table football, a kitchen and networked computers.
A day house is important for a good social mix between age groups, for competing in house events and to look after the interests of day pupils in a large boarding school. At Great, boys from different years mix very well, particularly around the pool table where we have a charity pool competition ongoing.
John Bishop has been a houseparent for three years and an assistant for three years before that. He is tutor in charge of Italian and coaches football and tennis. Prior to joining Millfield John taught in Kent and Italy. His interests include sport, football, tennis and swimming. He plays guitar and bass guitar, and also enjoys reading and spending time in Italy with family.
