Medical Centre
The Millfield Medical Centre, located at the heart of the Millfield campus between the main school area and the majority of the boarding houses, can treat a complete range of illnesses in exactly the same manner as any other surgery. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week during term time by a highly competent and dedicated health care team consisting of seven fully qualified nurses and a health care assistant.
Millfield’s policy is to give all new boarding pupils a medical in order to check and monitor their physical health and well being whilst at the school. All girl boarders are weighed once a term.
Other services offered by the Medical Centre include:
• Asthma clinic
• Travel clinic for vaccinations/malaria tablets etc
• Allergy clinic
• Teenage sexual health clinic
• Eating disorder clinic
• Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) testing annually
• Minor injuries clinic
• Minor surgery clinic
Boarding Pupils
Millfield boarding pupils also have access to an onsite GP with a doctors’ surgery held every morning, Monday to Friday and on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. A female doctor is available every Thursday or on request. An appointment to see the doctor can either be made through the houseparent or, if over 16, directly with the Medical Centre.
A doctor is also available in the autumn and spring terms on Saturday afternoons for sports related injuries only.
Dental Care
All routine dental care should be undertaken at home during the holidays. Private emergency appointments can be arranged as required. The private dental insurance scheme offered by the school will cover the cost of these appointments. Orthodontic treatments can be arranged on a private basis only.
Caring for sick pupils
The Millfield Medical Centre houses 15 beds that are covered 24 hours a day, and a self contained isolation unit. This means for those children with severe or highly infectious illnesses they can be comfortably looked after by trained professionals away from the boarding house reducing any risk of spreading the illnesses. In the event of minor illness, boarders are normally nursed in their boarding houses, with full back-up from the medical staff. Close liaison is maintained between houseparents, medical staff and the parents of sick children in all cases, although the right to confidentiality is given after the age of 16.
Physio Clinic
We also offer a fully licensed Physio and Rehab Clinic located on site. Services provided include injury management, low back pain management, clinical pilates and sports massage therapy.
