Life at School

The school day has been planned around providing all students with the opportunity to discover the best of themselves and to prepare them to face the challenges of modern life.

Within the secure context of constant individual care, students enjoy and benefit from all the stimulation and diversity that Millfield has to offer. The School has a broad academic entry and is genuinely co-educational: over 750 boys and approximately 500 girls of varying abilities share all academic and social activities, segregated only in housing.

Every student belongs to a house which provides the secure base on which he or she can build emotional stability and self-confidence.

Houses are a major part of life at Millfield. About 75% of pupils are boarders and live in one of Millfield’s 18 boarding houses, 14 of which are situated on campus. There are also 5 day houses (3 for boys and 2 for girls).

Houses often hold social events, as well as organising trips out. They also form the basis of groupings for many School competitions. Each house has its own team spirit and its pupils develop a strong sense of loyalty to it. Students usually remain in the same house throughout their time at School and as they progress, they are encouraged to take on increasing levels of responsibility as monitors and house prefects.

Day pupils and boarders from a variety of different countries, cultures and religions come together to form the School’s rich and diverse community. Working and living in this community is regarded as being a valuable learning experience for students.

All students in the School, irrespective of their religion, are encouraged to explore and develop their own faith, in an atmosphere of tolerance towards others’ beliefs.
