Personal and Social Education
Aims and Delivery
At Millfield, we strive not just to give our pupils a standard academic education but to give them an all round education, to prepare them for the outside world after they leave Millfield and to prepare them for the responsibilities and realities of adult life. Citizenship, Personal and Social Education (PSE) at Millfield is a compulsory non-examined programme for all pupils. Personal and Social Education (PSE) aims to give students the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead happy, healthy, confident and independent lives.
Group Tutors help to deliver the PSE programme once a week in a 30 minute lesson. The tutors have a variety of resources available to them which may include videos, games, models and presentations.
The Importance of Citizenship
As well as imparting factual information, the PSE programme offers young people the opportunity to acquire and use the skills which are essential for a healthy lifestyle, responsible citizenship, employment and lifelong learning.
Citizenship is about enjoying rights and exercising responsibilities in the various types of community to which people belong. Citizenship aims to help young people distinguish between evidence and opinion, to argue logically and to develop a sense of common humanity. We aim to help our pupils develop; a broad knowledge and understanding of the topical events they study; the rights, responsibilities and duties of citizens; forms of government; and the criminal and legal systems.
Sex Education at Millfield
Sex Education is part of the PSE programme but is taught separately in single sex house groups by a dedicated team of tutors. We aim to encourage pupils to make informed choices, and consider the consequences of their actions. We strive to foster positive attitudes and feelings and develop assertiveness skills to resist unhelpful pressure, thus enabling pupils to take appropriate decisions that help to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
