The School Day
Boarders staying in the country houses (off campus) take coaches to school in the morning. All the boarding students are in school at about quarter past eight in the morning, when they have breakfast in the Dining Hall. Lessons start at 8:55am, except for on Tuesdays and Fridays, when they start slightly earlier at 8:35am.
Each lesson is 35 minutes long, although many are double lessons of an hour and 10 minutes. There is a morning break of about half an hour after the first three lessons when many students catch up on their work, practise musical instruments or just socialise, then they go on to another two lessons before they break for lunch. On Wednesdays and Saturdays students only have morning school, with games or other activities in the afternoon, so students are free to move on to their respective activities after having lunch.
Lunch break is from 12:35 to 2:05, except on Tuesdays, when it is 12:55 and Thursdays at 1:15. For afternoon school there are two more lessons and then students are free to participate in a wide range of other activities. All pupils, except for those in the Fifth and Upper Sixth years, take part in the Millfield Activities Programme at least once after school. Boarders in country houses catch their buses back at about 6pm, after they have had supper in the school dining room. (Sometimes, supper is back at the country houses.) All pupils must be off campus by 6.45pm, although pupils are allowed back onto campus after prep (7pm to 9pm) to use sports and other facilities. Day pupils are totally involved in all school day activities apart from the evening meal. They are asked to register before school on a daily basis as determined by their Day Houseparents.
