Sports at Millfield
Achievements
Millfield is justifiably proud of its reputation as the best sporting school in Britain. This reputation has been gained through the winning of many national championships over the years in a variety of sports and also by the exploits of many famous former pupils who have gone on to achieve great things in the sporting world. However, Millfield’s philosophy has always been sport for all, because we believe the provision of a healthy level of exercise and activity is essential to the wellbeing of our pupils. The top teams and the elite sportsmen and women are great role models, but the many other teams and competitors who turn out for the School with great determination and enthusiasm are absolutely at the heart of Millfield’s sporting success.
In recent years Millfield teams have won national championships in Football, Golf, Hockey, Girls’ Athletics, Modern Pentathlon, Tetrathlon, Rugby 7’s, Boys’ Squash, Girls’ Squash, Cricket, and Girls’ Tennis.
Many internationally renowned sportsmen and women received their early coaching at Millfield. J P R Williams, the rugby legend, Gareth Edwards, the British Lions and Welsh Rugby International, Mary Bignal-Rand, Long Jump Gold Medallist in 1964 Olympics and Duncan Goodhew, the 1980 Olympic Gold Medallist in 100m Breaststroke, and Simon Jones, the Test cricketer, are among many talented sports personalities who attended Millfield. Olympic Medallists, educated at Millfield, have included Sarah Winckless (Rowing, 2000), Dominic Mahony (Modern Pentathlon, 1988), Stephen Batchelor (Hockey, 1988 and 1984), Paul Howe (Swimming, 1984) and Adrian Jardine (Sailing, 1968). Millfield looks forward to some of its finest sportsmen and women currently at School taking part in London’s 2012 Olympics.
