Sport Approach and Achievement

Approach and Achievement

Millfield’s approach to sport is in line with the School’s belief that education is concerned with the whole human being, and that every pupil has the ability to achieve something worthwhile or even to excel in some field. The main objective of the sports programme, therefore, is to identify and develop a skill in every pupil, because achievement in one area so often proves to be the key to success in school life as a whole.

Millfield sport enjoys an international reputation based on superlative facilities and the skills of 130 staff coaches.

Senior boys and girls may choose from a vast selection of activities: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoeing, Caving, Chess, Climbing, Cricket, Croquet, Cross Country, Fencing, Fitness Training, Fly Fishing, Golf, Gun Club, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Lacrosse, Modern Pentathlon, Orienteering, Riding, Sailing, Shooting, Skiing, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ten Tors Training, Trampolining, Volleyball.

Each year 25 or more of Millfield’s students win international honours across a broad spectrum of games. In recent years Millfield teams have won national championships in Basketball, Golf, Hockey (Indoor and Out), Girls’ Athletics, Modern Pentathlon, Tetrathlon, Rugby 7’s, Boys’ Squash, Girls’ Squash, Cricket, Orienteering and Girls’ Tennis.

Millfield is extremely proud of its sporting record and achievements. Many internationally renowned sportsmen and women received their early coaching at Millfield. Gareth Edwards, the British Lions and Welsh Rugby International, Mary Bignal-Rand, Long Jump Gold Medallist in 1964 Olympics and Duncan Goodhew, the 1980 Olympic Gold Medallist in 100m Breaststroke are among many talented sports personalities who attended Millfield. Other Olympic Medallists over the years have included Sarah Winckless (Rowing, 2000), Dominic Mahony (Modern Pentathlon, 1988), Stephen Batchelor (Hockey, 1988 and 1984), Paul Howe (Swimming, 1984) and Adrian Jardine (Sailing, 1968). Millfield looks forward to some of its finest sportsmen and women currently at School taking part in London’s 2012 Olympics.

As many pupils as possible are involved in competitive matches and take advantage of the world class facilities on offer. In addition to regular fixtures against other schools, which involve as many pupils as possible, many School teams compete against adult and county standard opposition across a variety of sports. No pupil is prevented from partaking in a sport on grounds of a lack of ability.
