Archery
Pupils take archery as a recreational option once or twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays). All essential equipment is provided by the school. The pupils are taught basic shooting technique and are introduced to target and field shooting styles. The former involves shooting from known, marked distances at the familiar targets with concentric rings and a “gold” at the centre. Field shooting uses posters of wild animals aimed at from various unmarked distances which the archers must estimate.
We have regular informal competitions amongst participating archers, and we hold half-term and end-of -term shoots at our range, which is situated in the field above Orchards House. The main competition of the year is the annual Archery House Match in May, which is keenly contested by novices and “veterans” alike.
Pupils are encouraged to improve their standard further by joining a club close to where they live, and help is given to put them in touch with the club membership secretary, so that they can shoot in the holidays if they wish. Past pupils have gone on to join – and even found – university archery teams, and maintain their interest in the sport in this way.
