Once again the ‘season’ has been extremely condensed, with many fixtures, especially in the first half of a short term. The fixture list involved school matches, trophy meetings, relay meetings, area, county and national championships, and our own Schools’ Finals day.

The annual visit to the Achilles Relays in Oxford was probably our most successful ever, with the School returning with eight winners’ trophies, and breaking the meeting record in the senior Boys 4×100m and 4×200m enabling us to retain the Roger Bannister trophy for the most outstanding performance of the day.

In the Somerset County Championships, the School returned with 46 medals overall. The Girls team performed superbly to win the Final of the English Schools Cup in Abingdon. This is an extremely competitive event and a very difficult one to win.

We provided 23 athletes to represent Somerset at the South West Schools’ Championships at Bournemouth and from this, eight continued forward to the English Schools’ Championships at Birmingham; Katie Wickman went on to gain the gold medal in the Junior Girls Discus, being one of four finalists from Millfield.

Earlier in the year, Nikki Hamblin, representing England, won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia. This is an outstanding achievement in a competition that is traditionally a stepping stone for many, for successful senior international careers.
