Chess

Chess is thriving at Millfield. The School offers a Chess Scholarship; this is endorsed by Nigel Short, who officially launched it. The School has its own tutor in charge of chess, Matthew Turner, who is an International Grandmaster. Masterclasses, as well as individual tuition, are available, and personalised programmes of study are arranged.

During the year, Millfield pupils competed at the World Chess in Schools Championships in Greece and the European Communities Championships, in Austria. Peter Poobalasingam came equal first in the British Land UK Chess Challenge, the biggest chess event in the World. Millfield reached the Finals of the National Schools’ Chess Championships for the first time, finishing in third place.

Millfield hosts the Wessex Mega-Final stage of the UK Chess Challenge, the prestigious Millfield International, which has the premier school teams from across Britain and Ireland competing, as well as hosting the National Junior Squad Young Masters, which sees International youth players from across Europe competing (we even had someone from Afghanistan last year!)
