Clay Pigeon Shooting

The Schools Nationals Championship in Derbyshire during May this year provided a refreshing new venue, combined with the most formidable range of opposition we have yet encountered. The result was the culmination of a year of hard work by the squad, which had seen them shooting in Gloucestershire, Wales and Berkshire, in addition to flying to Scotland to guest in the Scottish Schools Nationals in Perthshire.

Unfortunately Warwick School have proved unbeatable on each occasion we have met and clinched the National A Team prize, by two clays from our A team, led by Freddie Mack. The Girls A team held off a strong Bloxham team to retain the Ladies trophy for the 5th consecutive year, but the competition went to the wire with a brave and skilled shoot off between the two team’s captains being won by Abi Cox as the rain literally ran down her neck! The Girls B team came in a close 3rd. The Boys B and C teams came 2nd and 3rd on the B team course.

The great popularity of clay shooting in the school rests on the achievement of those who participate on behalf of the school. We have gone from strength to strength in the school in recent years, there are up to 50 individuals shooting each week. There is immense and growing interest in the sport and it is good to see quality opposition teams beginning to appear at schools level. We have already agreed return matches each season with Warwick (we will beat them eventually and have already beaten them at pub skittles …. Well it’s a start!). Hitherto we have been restricted to shooting against university sides and agricultural colleges.
