Former Millfield pupil becomes Surrey Cricket Captain at 22

Former Millfield pupil Rory Hamilton-Brown, who only left the school four and a half years ago, has been appointed Captain of Surrey at the age of 22, making him the youngest captain in the current English county circuit, an outstanding and almost unheard of appointment for such a young and relatively inexperienced player. He has only played eight first class matches, averaging 39.36 with the bat and taking six wickets with his off-spin.

Rory first started playing for the Surrey 2nd XI at the age of 16, transferring to Sussex in 2007. He won the "man of the match" award in the 2009 Twenty20 Cup quarter final against Warwickshire.

The announcement was made on Christmas Eve, after he was released from his contract by Sussex. Rory has been tipped as a future England Captain by Surrey manager Chris Adams, who was Rory's Captain at Sussex. Adams hailed him as a natural born leader.

Commenting on the news, Mark Davis, Rory's Cricket coach whilst at Millfield said: "It was apparent from an early age that Rory had every chance in becoming an outstanding cricketer. His attributes meant he excelled at all disciplines - batting, bowling and fielding. He also proved himself to be an astute captain and led all age group teams to considerable success. In training and fitness he would spend hours honing in his skills and left no stone unturned striving for perfection. I am not surprised that Rory is being discussed as a future England cricketer and potential captain of his country".
