Millfield hockey girls have hugely successful year
The girls' 1st XI ended their year on a high with a resounding victory at the Kirkham tournament last weekend. This was a round robin competition in which Millfield won three of its five games and drew in the other two. Millfield beat Pocklington 3-0, Sedbergh 4-0, Kirkham 2-0, and drew 1-1 against George Watson's, and 0-0 against British Colleges. This was a developmental side led by Captain Stef Williams in one of her last performances for the school. Year 11 pupil Yasmin Lewis reviews a successful year for girls' hockey at Millfield and its recent culmination at the national finals.
2009-10 was a fantastic year for the girls and their hockey, with all three teams making it through to the nationals. On the 1st and 2nd of March the U18 and U16 girls teams travelled up to Cannock to fight for the title of national champions. The U14 team were to follow the elder girls on the 3rd and 4th of March. With the U16s first match just after midday the girls had to begin their journey swiftly, allowing time for the long drive. Each team had four tough matches to play over the course of the two days, allowing time for finals and play offs. The first day did not go in favour for the U16s as they played some fantastic hockey but could not put the ball in the back of the goal, meaning they only just lost their first two games, each by one goal. The team were hugely disappointed by this but were determined to pick themselves up as they knew that there were still two hard matches which they would have to play well as a team in. On paper the second day looked like it would be tougher for the girls as they were playing the top two teams in their pool. Trent was their first match and most people believe that it was one of the best matches of the tournament, mainly due to the sheer determination of the players on each team. The final score turned out to be a draw (2-2), showing how hard the Millfield girls worked, considering Trent were the national winners. The girls' last game of the day, did not turn out to be as much of an intense game as the previous but they managed to settle with a draw, allowing the day to end on a high. Overall the two days did not turn out as successfully as the girls had hoped but it was a good experience for them as a team and hopefully they will learn well from it.
The overall rankings for the Millfield teams were:
U18 - 4th in the country
U16 - 9th in the country
U14 - 6th in the country
