Millfield Win Independent Schools Golf Association Grand Finals 2010
Millfield yesterday regained the Independent Schools Golf Association Championship for the first time in 3 years. In variable conditions, at Oulton Hall Resort, Leeds, the 3-boy Team of Max Smith, Ben Taylor and Harrison Greenberry posted a combined 2-round total of 9 under par to beat Loretto School, Musselburgh, by 3 clear shots.
Max Smith, who takes up a golf scholarship at the University of Tennessee next year, spearheaded the effort and took individual Championship honours. Carding a combined total of 10 under par (gross) on the par 71 course, Max Smith brought the team home with a tournament best 65.
With Harrison Greenberry carding 1 over and Ban Taylor 4 over par, Millfield ended the first day with a 2-shot buffer from Loretto, with Wellington School a further 5 shots back in third. Final day groupings had Max Smith playing with rivals from both schools, and Ben Taylor and Harrison Greenberry going head-to-head with one from each opponent. But firmly focused on their own games, when Ben Taylor turned at 1 under and Harrison Greenberry 1 over par after 9 holes, Millfield remained in the driving seat.
With the wind gusting and rain threatening, the pair safely navigated Oulton Hall's top 9 holes to finish with scores of level par and 2 over, respectively (2-round totals of 4 over for Ban Taylor and 3 over for Harrison Greenberry). Stuart Wells, Millfield's PGA Professional Coach said: "The boys all played with great composure, determination and control. They were a credit to themselves and were very professional throughout the whole event."
Matching their golf skills with academic achievement, Ben Taylor will follow Max Smith the States in September, taking a golf scholarship at Nova Southeastern University, Florida, while 16-year old Harrison Greenberry will return to studies for his forthcoming GCSEs."
