Millfield Senior School for pupils aged 13-18

About Millfield Sport News

The past few weeks have seen some inspirational opportunities for our sports players. The U15 boys footballers had a successful tour to Portugal at half term. An Upper 6th Form 2nd XV travelled to Dublin to play rugby against the famous Blackrock College. Jazmin Sawyers and Oscar Appleby raced down the Igls track in Austria in further preparation for the bobsleigh at next year's inaugural Youth Winter Olympics. And our dancers played host to choreography from the Ballet Rambert!

Sport is about inspiration, and we are indebted to the on-going efforts of our coaches. In his new role as Director of Hockey Coaching, Reggie Keates is inspiring a new generation of Millfield players, with the girls 1st XI for example now having amassed 7 hours of play without conceding a goal. Congratulations to Lucy Taylor and Becky Garner who have been sharing the goalkeeping duties, and of course to all their team mates. Phil Thomas and Julie Sinkins have helped Simon Pritchard and Katy Hancock to strong performances in British Tour tournaments, while the junior boys and girls teams continue to progress in their national champs. And Ian Thomas was rewarded for his drive to the Belgian Junior Open Squash Championships by seeing Daniel Poleshchuk, Fiona Murphy and Roee Avraham finish 3rd, 5th and 7th respectively in the U17s, and Angus Gillams win the plate.

Perhaps the biggest highlight in performance terms has been the dual success of our horse riders, with last year's Spirit of Millfield Sports Coach of the Year, Director of Riding Danny Anholt, leading our show jumpers and indoor eventers (JWS) to winners medals at the National Schools Equestrian Championships at Addlington. This is the first time in recent memory that Millfield has won both titles, and congratulations go to the show jumping team of Charlotte Bonnar, Jessica Boyce and Lucy and Tommy Quesnel and the JWS team also of Charlotte, Jessica and Lucy, plus Charlotte East. Thank you to all the staff at the Millfield Equestrian Centre who work tirelessly with the riders and horses, and best wishes for continued success to all those pursuing their goals.
