Girls hockey team win regional competition
On Sunday 13th November Millfield's 1st XI girls hockey team set off to Clifton College to compete in the 2011 outdoor regional competition.
After managing to win the preliminary round without conceding a goal, the girls received a confidence boost as they headed to the regional competition.
Although we were going to start the tournament with half our team having at least minor injuries, we still had a positive mind set.
The competition was split into two groups, both having four teams. Each game was to be 20 minutes both ways, including the semi-final and the final.
For us, the first game was against the hosting side, Clifton College, and after a slow start, we managed to grab a win of 3-0.
Our next game was against Marlborough College who we had recently beaten in a school match.
However, we didn't go into the match thinking it would be easy. We kept our minds focused and concentrated on this match and gained ourselves a 5-0 win.
Our third and final group match was against Taunton school whom we had played twice before this season.
We needed to win this match in order to top the group and managed to pull-off a 4-0 victory.
By this stage in the competition we could really start to feel the burning of our muscles and some of us were treating injuries.
We were scheduled to play Canford School in the semi-final and, as we hadn't played them yet this season, Reggie went to look at how they played in previous matches in order to lay out a game plan for us.
Our performance in this match really showed how tired we were but we scored the first goal with unfortunately Canford scoring one shortly afterwards.
With about three minutes to go, with the whole team doing their best to get the ball into the circle, a goal was scored by Paige Roberts to get us into the final.
After a disappointing performance, Reggie reminded us of what our reward was for winning this next match...a place in the National Finals.
With aching legs and muscles, we had only 40 minutes left to play. I could see how tired the girls were so putting the motivation back into them wasn't easy.
Soon into the second half we scored the first goal of the match, and to finish the game off, Maddie Wilkins scored two penalty flicks to win us the tournament.
At long last our goal was reached and replacing the tired looks on our faces were huge smiles.
A long day of hard work and energy had paid off and we proved to ourselves that we are an amazing team. I am so proud of the team and it is an honour to captain these girls.
