Former Millfield pupil test-drives for Mercedes Formula One team
Former Millfield pupil Sam Bird was in the fast-lane last week as he helped the Mercedes Formula One team to test developments and tyres ahead of the 2012 season.
The 24-year-old, who left Millfield in 2005, completed 104 laps of the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and recorded the second-fastest time of all drivers.
He said: "We had a very good day and were able to cover a lot of mileage. We were focusing on further development work for 2012 which went well and the team are very positive about the results gained.
"I would like to say thank you to MERCEDES GP PETRONAS for trusting me with the driving responsibilities for this three-day test.
"It's been a very positive and enjoyable experience for me and I've greatly enjoyed working with the team."
The aim of the tests are to help young drivers progress to Formula One while also giving teams a chance to try out new ideas at a time when testing is otherwise banned.
