About Millfield Sport News
Sports Desk - 28 November
It has been another busy weekend for Millfield Sport, with the campus thronged with activity on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday saw 60+ Millfield pupils dominate the South West Schools Biathlon Championships, and our thanks go to David Shepperd, Sophia Bhaumick, Georgie Kloos, Danielle Morgan, Kenken Aoshima, Alex Davis, Maddy Hayward-Brown and Alice Hannan for helping with the organisation. This followed perhaps the strangest weekend sight on Saturday, with a dozen pupils - led by Helen Smith and Will Cowen - in and out of wetsuits transitioning between the pool and their bikes during a triathlon training clinic.
The playing fields were packed with home-and-away blocks in hockey against Whitgift, netball against Cardiff and the Vale, and rugby against London Oratory. A young and eager boys hockey 1st XI delivered their best performance of the season so far with a 5-3 win over arguably the best team in the country. The pick of the rugby performances was perhaps the U16As 62-0 win, closely followed by the 2nd XVs 50-0 win. And matching all of those was the gutsy 0-0 draw for the U16A footballers, with Will Godmon posting a clean sheet against the professional club.
Our swimmers continued riding their wave of success, winning 10 medals at the English Schools relays in Southampton, including golds for Tom Gabb, Calum Eley, Tom Kingham, Harry Moore, Josh Booth, Dan Liu, James Guy and Marcus Barker.
And we were equally busy on the international front in bobsleigh, fencing, squash and hockey. In Koenigssee (Germany), Jazmin Sawyers earned double bronze medals to move closer to selection for the GB Bobsleigh Team for January's Winter Youth Olympics. Jaz's performances were matched by OMs Olly Biddulph and James Lelliot in the men's sleigh. In fencing, George Bailey finished 30th out of 190 at the Junior World Cup in Halle (Germany), with Craig Worman also making his British Team debut. In hockey, Ffion Thompson made the final cut for the England U16 hockey squad that will play internationals later in the year. And in football, James Golby has been made captain of the ISFA U18 team, joined by Louis Downing and Dom Webb, with Matt Golby, Carlo Mole and Will Godmon selected at U16.
Results from these and all other fixtures can be found on the Millfield website.
