A highlight in the schoolboy rugby calendar - Millfield vs Sedbergh
School rugby teams have on average 2 fixtures per week, but there are occasionally some very special matches that are truly memorable and send a buzz around the Schools and the rugby community.
Yesterday's Millfield v Sedbergh fixture was just that, providing a showcase of exciting, competitive rugby at the highest level.
In the region of 200 boys took part in the matches, ranging from the U14s through to the final showcase game of the First XVs.
Parents from Sedbergh drove 5 hours each way to be at the Event, which included guests from Rosslyn Park 7s, Bath and Bristol Rugby Clubs, the RFU and Exeter University amongst others.
"This match is the highlight of any Millfield Rugby player's career" said Kelston Stark, Captain of Millfield First XV "Playing against Sedbergh, one of the best teams in the country, at home on the Gareth Edwards pitch; and for me, as First Team Captain, made this day incredibly emotive".
In the region of 400 people watched the First Team match, which was a great spectacle, showcasing schoolboy rugby at the highest level.
"The atmosphere was fantastic around the School" said Craig Considine, Headmaster. "It reminded me of when I was Headmaster of Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand, with the whole school tingling with the spirit, community and excitement of the day".
John Mallett, Director of Rugby at Millfield is a strong believer that playing competitive rugby is crucial in developing strong foundations in rugby values at every level. The Millfield v Sedbergh fixture helps develop those core values and for pupils to learn how to deal with the pressures and expectations that come with playing rugby under a spotlight.
All the matches were hotly contested, but fittingly both School's came away with 3 victories apiece.
